The Imagination of Kristen
It all began at age two when a little girl melted an entire box of pastels on her mother's wall heater! Instead of any disciplinary action her mother only encouraged her creative process. The young girl was simply delighted with the memory of all those beautiful colors that inspire her to this very day. So began the, "Art School of Life" for this amazing American treasure and folk artist, Kristen Powers.
Kristen was born in Marin County, California and grew up admiring the works of noted artists such as Laurel Burch and Peter Max. As always Kristen was drawn to their vivid pallets along with their free style of line. As a blues or jazz musician improvises and colors a melody for the ears so does the artist with line and color for the eyes. A perfect world for Kristen would be, "A house that stays clean, kids that always listen, the blues playing in the background, an art studio filled with fabulous art materials and me with nothing but time". In the real world she has often found a messy house, kids that won't listen and cartoons playing in the background instead of the blues. Kristen now has her own family with five children, Maxi, Alexis, Cheyenne, Marin & Michael. Now living in happy chaos in St. Louis with her husband TC and kids Kristen has her wonderful art supplies but hardly any time. "That's okay though, because while I've been busy, I've become me!"
The fanciful images and sometimes even whimsical art of Kristen Powers is a reflection of her philosophy and many life experiences as a working Mom. "My art has been a journey, a part of my life that has been with me always and continues to grow, as I do". Over the years Kristen has had her share of, "real jobs", including a stint in the US Army although during this time she was not truly fulfilled. At some point, as with all artists, a decision has to be made to, "GO FOR IT". She figured that if she followed her heart, (and her Mom's advice), it would lead her in the right direction. Once her sites were set; her professional direction began to develop although not overnight. As Kristen has pointed out, it is her life's journey and her way of expressing it that makes her an evolving artist. This is perhaps why her art reaches out and touches so many people today, it is real and sincere and unique. Kristen Powers simply is a creative soul who believes that there is art everywhere in everything we do and see each day.
Kristen has taught art workshops all over the country, created two instructional art videos, appeared on the Carol Duvall & Home Matters show, designed t-shirts for the Build A Bear Workshop, created a line of greeting cards, gift items, designed rubber stamps, and created miniature paintings on jewelry, furniture, clocks and treasure boxes.
Currently working with Leflang Custom Creations, Kristen is expanding her creative creations all over the world. The term, "Supermom & Superartist", may best describe her journey. Kristen, "Loves color and still loves to color".
